Its size can be impressive with a record of 107 cm and a weight of 11.3 kg. More commonly, it reaches a maximum size of 75 cm for a weight of 7 kg. It is a voracious carnivore that can ingest prey represent a good fraction of its size. This species breeds in spring in river beds. After spawning, females leave first the spawning site for a few weeks later followed by the males. Males are usually smaller than females, there is no other apparent sexual dimorphism.
